Political relations

Hungary and Indonesia celebrated the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2025. We established diplomatic relations with Indonesia in 1955, opened our Embassy in Jakarta in 1957, and Indonesia opened its representation in Budapest in 1960.

Over the past 70 years, we have developed a close political and economic cooperation with Indonesia, which is now primarily focused on foreign trade and technology transfer. We support the strengthening role of Indonesia as of the world's third largest democracy in Asia and globally, as well as its activity in international organizations.

We are convinced that Indonesia, as a leading and the only G20 member of ASEAN, will continue to be an independent and stabilizing player in Southeast Asia, the Indian Ocean region, and global processes. Indonesia’s pragmatic foreign policy approach, commitment to peace, persistent efforts to reform multilateralism, and fight against extremism and terrorism are important points of connection between our countries.

A highlight of our bilateral relations was the visit of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to Indonesia in 2016 and 2020, after which our economic relations significantly intensified. Bilateral meetings have remained frequent, resulting in a total of 13 meetings between our countries at the level of foreign ministers since 2014. Most recently, on 21 November 2025, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó held bilateral talks with Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono in Brussels, on the side-lines of the Indo-Pacific Forum, during which the parties reaffirmed their commitment to expanding political and economic cooperation, building on the 70-year success story of Hungarian-Indonesian relations.
